One of the ways you can improve your hair health is simply by taking care of it with the best shampoos available on the market. But, over the years, there has been a rise in concern over the use of certain man-made chemicals like sulphates and parabens in shampoos. However, science has shown that these compounds are not a cause of concern and are quite safe for use, but this largely depends on who you are and if you have underlying health conditions like sensitive skin or eczema. Nevertheless, it always feels better when natural compounds are used, especially when it pertains to our health. This said, just because something is natural doesn’t mean that it is safe. Thus, caution should be taken when selecting your natural shampoos.

We’re always looking for naturally effective ways to look our best, especially when it comes to things that we pay attention to quite often: our hair, skin, and nails.

Here are some evidence-based tips that can maintain the natural, healthy looking hair, skin, and nails of your youth.

1. Natural Ways to Boost Hair Health

One of the ways you can improve your hair health is simply by taking care of it with the best shampoos available on the market.

But, over the years, there has been a rise in concern over the use of certain man-made chemicals like sulphates and parabens in shampoos (1).

However, science has shown that these compounds are not a cause of concern and are quite safe for use, but this largely depends on who you are and if you have underlying health conditions like sensitive skin or eczema (2).

Nevertheless, it always feels better when natural compounds are used, especially when it pertains to our health.

This said, just because something is natural doesn’t mean that it is safe. Thus, caution should be taken when selecting your natural shampoos (3).

Aside from choosing the best shampoo for your hair, other ways you can maintain a healthy shine is by maintaining high protein intake in your diet, consuming more omega-3 fatty acids, and avoiding washing your hair too much (4).

Interestingly, even some shampoos contain a combination of protein and healthy oils that can greatly benefit the health of your hair (5).

Main point: Choosing shampoos with high levels of proteins and healthy oils, increasing your omega-3 intake, and maintaining a consistent, but not too frequent, wash schedule are some great ways to boost your hair health.

2. Ways to Improve Your Skincare

If you are looking to improve your skin health, you’re going to want to boost your collagen production.

This is because collagen is a critical protein that gives your skin elasticity—or the ability to stretch and shrink. Over time, this elasticity can decrease and cause the formation of wrinkles (6).

It makes sense then to increase levels of collagen in your body so that your skin can maintain its elasticity as long as possible.

Some of the ways you can improve collagen production in your body include:

  • Aloe vera — not only is it great for sunburns, but aloe vera can also stimulate collagen production, making it a great skincare supplement! (7)
  • Vitamin C — this vitamin is essential for many functions in the body, and one of those functions is to help in the production of a compound known as hyaluronic acid, which is thought to be important for collagen production and decreases as we age (8).
  • Ginseng — whether you include it in your meals or take it as a supplement, ginseng has been shown over and over again to be very helpful in maintaining a healthier looking skin through its “anti-wrinkle” properties (9).

Main point: When looking for ways to improve your skincare, think collagen! Some compounds that can help increase collagen include aloe vera, vitamin C, and ginseng.

3. Maintaining Healthy Nails

If you’re trying to improve the look and feel of your nails, consider these points in your nailcare regimen to help you restore their strength and appearance.

  • Biotin is a B vitamin that plays a role in many bodily functions, one of them being nail health. In fact, a large review of several studies suggests that biotin is very useful in treating many nail conditions, which highlights the importance of this vitamin when caring for your nails (10).
  • Water is especially important for nail health as it helps proteins like keratin hold the nail structure together. Without water, these proteins will lose their function and the nail can become weak and brittle. So, make sure you stay hydrated and drink plenty of water! (11)
  • Limit cosmetic procedures like manicures as these tend to wear away at the nail bed. Although you may want to improve the appearance of your nails by having a manicure done, this is temporary. Having this done often can lead to several conditions that can impact the strength of your nails (12).
  • Moisturize your nails often. When you do, make sure to distribute the lotion into both the fingernails and cuticles, especially the base of the nail. This can help hydrate the nail so it can retain its moisture and strength (13).

Main point: There are many ways you can help maintain the strength of your nails. Some of the best ways you can do this are by taking biotin supplements, increasing water intake, limiting cosmetic procedures (e.g., manicures), and moisturizing often.

In the end…

There are several ways you can improve the look and feel of your hair, skin, and nails.

Importantly, it is often a combination of the tips listed here (as well as others listed elsewhere in reputable sources) that will help you achieve the best strength and appearance for your hair, skin, and nails.

Try a few of these out and see if you can begin to notice a difference.

As always, you should discuss any changes to your diet or lifestyle with a healthcare professional.
